Pet Heat Safety Facts
Humidity can really turn up the heat for our furry friends, making it tougher for them to stay cool. Be sure to keep them comfy and safe by offering lots of shade, fresh water, and breaks from the heat.
- Dogs can suffer heatstroke in just 10 minutes—especially in hot cars or direct sunlight.
- A car’s interior can reach 120°F in minutes, even with the windows cracked.
- Dogs don’t sweat like humans. They rely on panting and limited sweat through paw pads to cool down.
- Short-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs are more prone to overheating.
- Signs of heatstroke in pets include: heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness, and collapse.
- Walk your dog early or late—avoid the midday sun when temperatures are highest.
- Hot pavement can burn paw pads. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
- Always provide shade and fresh water when pets are outdoors.
- Never leave pets unattended in parked vehicles—even for a minute.
- Humidity makes heat worse for pets. It slows down their ability to cool themselves.
- Exercise caution—literally. Too much play or walking in heat can quickly overheat pets.
- Older and overweight pets and those with health conditions are at greater risk in the heat.
- Horses and livestock need heat care too. Access to shade, clean water, and airflow is vital.
- Cooling vests, mats, and fans can help pets stay safe in warm weather.
- Freeze dog-safe treats like ice cubes with broth or watermelons for cooling snacks.
- Shaving your pet’s coat isn’t always safe—some fur acts as natural insulation. Check with your vet.
- Cats can overheat too! Make sure indoor cats have cool spots to retreat.
- Hydration is key. Keep multiple bowls of clean water inside and out.
- Watch for droopy ears, red gums, or glazed eyes—they could signal overheating.
- Heatstroke can be deadly. When in doubt, seek emergency vet care immediately.
