July is Disability Pride Month
By Library Staff
Disability Pride Month coincides with the anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) being signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990. The ADA protects the rights of people with disabilities against discrimination in schools, workplaces, transportation, and other spaces open to the public.
The Disability Pride flag was designed by Ann Magill and represents:
- Diagonal Band: the barriers that separate the disabled from society, representing light and creativity cutting through darkness
- Red: physical disabilities
- Gold: neurodiversity including autism and ADHD
- White: invisible disabilities and undiagnosed conditions
- Blue: emotional and psychiatric disabilities including anxiety and depression
- Green: sensory disabilities, including deafness, blindness, and other sensory disabilities
- Faded Black Background: mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse
