More Than a Wall: The Story of the Corpus Christi Seawall

By: Shelby Adamson, Special Collections and Archives Librarian, Corpus Christi Public Libraries

Collection: VARIOUS

For more than eighty years, the Corpus Christi Seawall has stood as one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Built between 1939 and 1941, the seawall was designed to protect Corpus Christi from hurricanes and storm surge following the devastating storms of 1916 and 1919. Its distinctive stepped design strengthened the shoreline while creating a public waterfront that transformed the bayfront for generations.

Historic photographs preserved by Corpus Christi Public Libraries document the seawall's construction, its role as a gathering place, and the changing landscape that developed around it. From workers building the massive concrete structure to waterfront kiosks that once lined the bayfront and views of the now-demolished Corpus Christi Coliseum, these images capture the many ways the seawall has shaped community life.

More than a protective barrier, the seawall became a destination where residents and visitors gathered to stroll, fish, attend events, and enjoy views of Corpus Christi Bay. Today, it remains a defining feature of the city's waterfront and a lasting symbol of Corpus Christi's connection to the coast.
