City Council Approves Port Partnership for Major Flood Protection and Infrastructure Improvements
At Tuesday’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, the Council approved two agreements with the Port of Corpus Christi Authority to advance critical infrastructure improvements in and near the downtown area.
The first agreement provides up to $13.85 million for the Port to design and construct floodwall upgrades near the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. The project includes construction of a floodwall and bulkhead with a concrete apron along the Ship Channel. The improvements will provide additional flood protection, improve pedestrian connectivity along the waterfront, and support Ship Channel operations. The project is funded through prior Type A Sales Tax and new Type B Sales Tax funds.
“This is a win-win proposition for the Port and the City,” said Jeff Edmonds, Director of Engineering Services. “Working with the Port as a partner provides synergies that will help the City expedite some critical infrastructure repairs.”
The Council also approved a $2 million amendment to an existing agreement with the Port for improvements along Sam Rankin Street from Port Avenue to Interstate-37, bringing the total agreement to $4.5 million. The additional funding will support utility construction on City-owned portions of Sam Rankin Street, including water, wastewater, and gas infrastructure. Funding is available through the City’s Wastewater, Water, and Gas Capital Funds.
The Sam Rankin Street project is also part of the City’s Bond 2024 program. The street project includes storm drainage improvements and leverages an $8.5 million grant secured by the Port of Corpus Christi.
Together, the projects strengthen the City and Port’s partnership while coordinating investments in flood protection, utilities, transportation infrastructure, and waterfront connectivity.
