City of Corpus Christi Awarded $3.5 Million Federal Grant for Major Pedestrian Safety and Sidewalk Expansions

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The City of Corpus Christi has been awarded over $3.5 million in federal grant funding by the Corpus Christi Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to construct three major sidewalk and trail connection projects.

Funded through the federal Surface Transportation Block Set-Aside program, the grants cover 80% of total project costs to improve safety, mobility, and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and non-motorized travelers across the city. The City will provide a 20% local matching fund of $875,800, bringing the total investment to over $4.37 million.

The funding will be divided among three key infrastructure projects:

· North Beach Sidewalk Project ($1.3M total value): Installs approximately 2,200 linear feet of new, 5-foot-wide ADA-compliant concrete sidewalks along the US 181 Frontage Road, creating a continuous walkway from Lighthouse Pointe Apartments to Beach Avenue. Improvements include curb ramps, detectable warning surfaces, and utility/drainage adjustments.

· District 5 Trail Connectivity & Safety Improvements ($1.4M total value): Adds roughly 4,600 linear feet of 8-foot-wide shared-use path to complete critical links in the District 5 trail network between the York Crossing Pedestrian Bridge and Rodd Field Road. The project establishes an east-west multi-modal corridor featuring high-visibility crossings, signage, and drainage enhancements.

· London ISD Pedestrian Safety Improvements ($1.6M total value): Enhances safe routes to school by building 2,500 linear feet of

5-foot-wide ADA-compliant sidewalk along London Pirate Road (CR 33) from London Elementary School to 500 feet north of London Towne Boulevard. Upgrades include driveway crossings, utility tweaks, and an upgraded Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) to improve street safety.

Engineering and design work for all three projects is scheduled to begin in 2027, with construction anticipated to start in 2029.

In addition to the City-related projects, the Flour Bluff Independent School District also received grant money from the MPO.

The City of Corpus Christi supported the application submission for Flour Bluff ISD, which will help fund a $1.1 million project. Among other items, the project will include a pedestrian crossing on the City’s right-of-way. The crossing, located at Hustlin Hornet Drive near Debra Lane, will include a marked crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and rectangular rapid-flashing beacons.

The Corpus Christi MPO works in partnership with local municipalities, transit agencies, and TxDOT to plan and fund regional transportation projects that enhance mobility, economic growth, and safety throughout the metropolitan area.
