City of Corpus Christi Monitoring Gulf Tropical Activity

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The City of Corpus Christi and its Office of Emergency Management are actively monitoring a Tropical Depression in the northeast Gulf. They will continue to track the weather situation throughout the coming days. The depression is expected to strengthen to a Tropical Storm tonight.

While the exact impact on the Coastal Bend communities remains under evaluation, the city is advising residents that now is the time to review emergency plans and ensure hurricane preparedness.

"Living along the coast requires constant vigilance throughout hurricane season," said Jace Johnson, Corpus Christi Emergency Management Coordinator. "Even when a tropical system is far off or uncertain in its path, conditions in the Gulf can change quickly. Taking a few proactive steps today ensures you and your family are ready if a major storm develops."

City officials recommend residents focus on the following areas to stay prepared:

Build or Refresh Your Emergency Kit

·         Stock enough non-perishable food and bottled water for at least 3 to 7 days per person and pet.

·         Include essential medications, flashlights, batteries, a manual can opener, first aid supplies, and important family documents in a waterproof container.

Know Your Plan & Evacuation Route

·         Identify safe shelters and know your local evacuation zone.

·         Plan communication methods with family members in case local cell towers or power grids go down.

·         Individuals needing special assistance during an evacuation are encouraged to register with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR) by dialing 2-1-1.

Secure Your Property & Review Insurance

·         Clear yards of loose debris, trim dead tree branches, and inspect roof coverings.

·         Review homeowner or renter insurance policies. Note that flood insurance typically takes 30 days to become effective, so securing coverage early is essential.
