City of Corpus Christi Orders Special Election for "Fair Water Amendment" Charter Petition
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, the Council voted to approve a one-reading ordinance ordering a special election to be held on November 3. The election will submit a proposed citizen-initiated charter amendment, known as the "Fair Water Amendment," to local voters for consideration.
The ordinance establishes all procedures for holding the election, provides for required notice and publication, sets up branch early polling places, designates specific polling locations, and authorizes a joint election with Nueces County. Additional provisions enacted relate directly to the administration and purpose of the electoral process.
The special election follows a petition filed with the City Secretary’s Office on June 15, regarding industrial water drought surcharges and curtailment policies. The City Secretary’s Office verified the petition and, by ordinance, certified that the petition met the minimum signature requirement mandated by state law. Certification requires the City Council to place the proposed charter amendment before the electorate at the upcoming November 2026 uniform election.
Voters will decide on the proposed charter amendment on November 3. Additional information regarding polling hours, early voting schedules, and designated precinct locations will be available on the City Secretary’s Office's 2026 Election Central website.
