City of Corpus Christi Pursues $221,404 Federal Grant to Support Police Equipment

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, the Council approved submitting a grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice for the Fiscal Year 2026 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program in the amount of $221,404.

As part of the joint application process, the City will enter into a 50/50 Interlocal Agreement with Nueces County, a collaborative partnership that has successfully operated since 2008. Under the agreement, if awarded, the funds will be split evenly, with $110,702 allocated to Nueces County and $110,702 retained by the City. The Nueces County Commissioners Court formally approved the interlocal agreement on September 23, 2026.

The City of Corpus Christi will use its portion of the grant funds to partially fund year five of its comprehensive supply agreement with Axon Enterprise, Inc. This investment directly funds the purchase of 445 tasers, related supplies, software licenses, and specialized training for the Corpus Christi Police Department (CCPD).

CCPD utilizes a combination of funds from the Crime Control and Prevention District (CCPD) and the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant to maintain its inventory goal of 506 tasers.

“Since the federal grant program's inception in 1996, CCPD has received awards totaling $6,685,549,” Police Chief Mike Markle said. “These funds have supported critical law enforcement vehicles and equipment.”

The grant requires no local cash match from the City.
