Corpus Christi Water Addresses Temporary Taste and Odor Changes

Corpus Christi Water is advising customers that they may notice a temporary earthy or musty taste and odor in their tap water. The water remains compliant with all federal and state health standards and is safe for drinking, cooking, and everyday use.

The change results from naturally occurring compounds that can form in source water when sunlight, higher temperatures, and nutrients are favorable. These compounds can be detected by the general public at very low levels. They influence taste and smell but do not pose health risks in treated drinking water.

What CCW Is Doing

· Increased monitoring of all source water supplies

· Adjusting treatment at the O.N. Stevens Water Treatment Plant to improve water aesthetics

· Taste and odor can persist for a few days, depending on weather and water temperature

What Customers Can Do

· Refrigerating tap water in a covered pitcher can lessen the odor for some people

· Do not add extra chlorine or household chemicals to tap water

· Report any other water-quality concerns to 3-1-1
