Corpus Christi Water Provides Update on Water Taste and Odor Reports

Corpus Christi, TX – Corpus Christi Water (CCW) is providing an update on the earthy or musty taste and odor some customers have experienced in their tap water.

Last week, increased organic levels from the western reservoirs, transported via the Nueces River, were present at the O.N. Stevens Water Treatment Plant (ONSWTP). The increased organics are naturally occurring and are the cause of the taste and odor conditions in the water.

As of Thursday afternoon, compounds associated with taste and odor were no longer detected in the source water of ONSWTP. The organic compounds are moving through the distribution system, and residents may continue to notice them at home until the water has fully cleared.

Most areas should see improvement by early this week, though some residential areas may experience lingering effects longer. Water movement is driven by demand, resulting in varying flows through the distribution system. Typically, flushing water through the system is used to address this issue. However, with repairs underway on the Mary Rhodes Pipeline, this would not be a prudent action.

A press release was first issued on September 16 to advise CCW water customers of this situation.

CCW continues to track and monitor water quality at the ONSWTP and throughout the system. CCW asks that customers call 3-1-1 to report any water quality concerns. If the call is made after normal business hours, please use the number provided in the automated message.
