City Accepts Funding for Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – During today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council approved the acceptance of $15,092,700 from the Texas General Land Office’s Community Development Block Grants for Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) program. The funding will support improvements at the Greenwood and Oso Wastewater Treatment Plants. The grant does not require a City match.
The state funds are for use in areas impacted by recent disasters for projects that will mitigate future disaster risk and reduce future losses. The City operates six wastewater treatment plants, most of which have been in service for 50 to 70 years.
The grant funding is designated for flooding mitigation at the Greenwood Wastewater Treatment Plant and the installation of emergency generators at both the Greenwood and Oso facilities. This work will improve operational resiliency.
The Greenwood facility frequently experiences flooding, and this project will build cost-efficient floodproofing improvements to protect the plant and ensure continued operations during heavy rainfall. Additionally, the installation of emergency generators will allow both facilities to continue operations during weather-related power outages.
“Accepting this funding marks an important milestone for the City of Corpus Christi,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. “Improving our wastewater treatment facilities is essential to protecting public health, supporting responsible growth, and safeguarding our natural environment. As Mayor, I remain committed to making smart, forward-looking investments that ensure a stronger, more sustainable future for every resident of Corpus Christi.”
The project's next steps include design and procurement. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2026 and be completed in 2027.
