City Breaks Ground for Harbor Bridge Park Improvements
The City of Corpus Christi celebrated the start of construction for several key parks in the area surrounding the new Harbor Bridge. In a groundbreaking ceremony held today, city officials, community leaders, and residents gathered to celebrate the launch of these projects, which aim to enhance the quality of life for all residents.
Formerly Washington Elementary School Site (Washington Coles Park)
The plans for the Washington Coles Park include a vibrant combination of recreational and community spaces. Key features will include an amphitheater for community events, a modern pavilion, vendor space, and improved lighting. Additionally, approximately 200 parking spaces will be available, inviting residents to the North Beach Trailhead
T.C. Ayers Park
T.C. Ayers Park will undergo significant upgrades to serve the community better. The enhancements will feature a newly constructed softball field, a loop trail for both leisure and fitness activities, and improved sidewalks, providing a safe and accessible environment for park users.
Dr. H.J. Williams Memorial Park (Hillcrest Park)
Hillcrest Park is set to receive a series of enhancements, including resurfaced and newly covered basketball courts designed for community sports and activities. The park will also see the installation of modern playground equipment, new picnic areas for family gatherings, and a community garden that will foster local engagement and sustainable practices.
Ben Garza Park
Improvements at Ben Garza Park will feature the construction of a welcoming park entry plaza, alongside a new playground and additional picnic areas, creating a vibrant space for relaxation and recreation.
Hike and Bike Trail Connections
To further enhance connectivity and accessibility, the City plans to improve connections for hiking and biking trails. This includes the construction of a five-foot sidewalk, designed to facilitate enhanced access to key park locations, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle for residents. Park goers will be able to utilize the Washington Coles parking lot and walk casually from one park to another.
North Beach Trailhead
Additionally, the North Beach area will benefit from a new trailhead, providing improved access to the walking trail for the new Harbor Bridge and promoting outdoor activities for all ages.
In addition to these enhancements, each park will house monuments to historical Black leaders from Corpus Christi. These monuments will remind parkgoers of the impactful contributions made by these leaders.
The City of Corpus Christi is committed to creating spaces that foster community spirit and enhance the quality of life for all. These park developments represent a significant investment in the city's future and its residents' quality of life. Construction is scheduled to begin on November 17, with completion expected within one year.
