City Council Approves Construction Contract for Commodores Park Phase I Improvements

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and Council awarded a $3.4 million construction contract to Weaver & Jacob Constructors, Inc., based in Cuero, Texas, for Phase 1 of the Commodore Park Improvements project.

Project Highlights

Phase 1 of the Commodore Park enhancements will transform this mostly undeveloped public space on North Padre Island into a premier regional recreational destination. Key features of the project include:

  • Covered Basketball Court Pavilion: Providing a year-round sports venue.
  • Tennis and Pickleball Courts: With two tennis courts and four pickleball courts.
  • Playground: A fenced-in, shaded area with poured-in-place surfacing for safety.
  • Bird Observation Blind: Encouraging wildlife appreciation and education.
  • Concrete Walking Trail: For strolls and exercise.
  • Picnic Area: Designated space for family and community gatherings.
  • Parking and Accessibility: A concrete parking lot with golf cart accommodations and ADA accessibility throughout.
  • Park Lighting: Ensuring safety and extended use during evening hours.

“The transformation of Commodores Park marks another exciting investment in our city’s future,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. “These improvements will create spaces where families, residents, and visitors can come together to enjoy the natural beauty of North Padre Island. This project reflects our continued commitment to enhancing quality of life and expanding opportunities for outdoor recreation across Corpus Christi.”

"The planned developments align with the Commodore Park Master Plan and will serve as a vibrant recreational destination for both residents and visitors," Robert Dodd, Director of Parks and Recreation, said. 

Funding and Timeline

The project is funded through the Bond 2022 and 2024 programs. Construction is slated to begin in November, with an anticipated completion date in August 2026. 

This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to enhancing public spaces and improving the quality of life for all its residents.
