City Council Approves Contract for Far Field Modeling
Corpus Christi, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, the Council approved a professional services contract with Spheros Environmental Group Parent Inc., of Round Rock, Texas, for far field modeling throughout the Corpus Christi Bay System.
This contract adds to efforts in far-field modeling, building on earlier studies. By commissioning this independent analysis, the City enhances its scientific understanding of the bay system by using multiple datasets and methods.
The Far Field Modeling project will provide updated data for the bay system model, helping the City better understand water quality, salinity levels, and the environmental effects of large ship traffic in the Inner Harbor. The work will involve refining the model's grid resolution, simulating brine mixing, and expanding the model domain.
“This contract is an important step in ensuring we have the most current and accurate data to understand the bay system,” said Nicholas Winkelmann, Corpus Christi Water Chief Operating Officer.
On November 18, 2025, the City Council authorized the procurement process to select a vendor for the far-field study. On December 16, 2025, the Corpus Christi Water discussed the formation of the Far Field Advisory Committee to gather public input and ensure a transparent, collaborative analysis of the modeling process.
Modeling work will begin immediately. Updated model results are expected by April 28. The full project, including dry year modeling from 2012 to 2014, is planned for completion by June 30.
