City of Corpus Christi Partners with Crime Stoppers to Crack Down on Illegal Dumping
New Signage Strategy and Abatement Totals Highlight Citywide Enforcement Effort
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Illegal dumping is more than a neighborhood eyesore; it is a criminal offense that devalues property, threatens public health, and compromises the local environment. To combat this, the City’s Solid Waste Services (SWS) Compliance Team is escalating enforcement through a new partnership with Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers.
The collaboration involves installing high-visibility signage at known "dumping hotspots" across the city. These signs serve two purposes: as a legal deterrent to potential offenders and to educate residents about the Litter Critter Program, a free monthly disposal resource available to all city residents.
“The signs serve as a clear warning to those contemplating illegal disposal while empowering our neighbors to speak up,” said Guillermo Olvera, Code Compliance Superintendent. “When residents see the City taking a firm stand, they become our most valuable partners in protecting our community.”
In 2025 alone, a dedicated team of eight compliance officers and an abatement driver achieved significant results in keeping Corpus Christi clean:
- 1,181 Tons: Total weight of illegally dumped trash, including ordinance violations and service calls.
- 429 Tires: Collected during active patrols from known problematic areas and safely disposed of.
- Inter-Agency Support: The team works with the Corpus Christi Police Department on investigations and transient camp cleanups.
Beyond the visual blight, improperly discarded waste poses severe risks. Hazardous materials can leach into the city’s stormwater system, while large debris frequently creates road hazards for drivers.
The City reminds residents and businesses that illegal dumping carries financial consequences. Violators are subject to Resource Recovery Fees added to their utility bills:
- Standard Load: Fees typically start at $100 per truckload.
- Specialized Debris: Loose litter or construction materials can result in fees of up to $200 per load.
The City encourages residents to take an active role in the beautification of Corpus Christi:
- Report Active Dumping: Call 3-1-1 or visit 311.cctexas.com to submit a cleanup request or report a crime in progress.
- Request Deterrent Signage: Residents experiencing recurring issues in their neighborhood can request signs by calling the SWS Compliance Team at 361-826-4106.
