City of Corpus Christi Urges Residents to Prepare for Hurricane Season

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX—As the Atlantic hurricane season begins, the City of Corpus Christi urges all residents to take proactive steps to prepare themselves, their families, and their property for potential storms. Hurricane season extends through November 30, and early preparation is key to ensuring safety and resilience.

“Preparedness is the foundation of resilience,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. “In the face of any storm, Corpus Christi stands ready with the plans, resources, and resolve needed to protect lives and preserve the strength of our community.”

The City’s Office of Emergency Management recommends the following essential preparedness measures:

  • Develop a Family Emergency Plan: Discuss with your family what to do before, during, and after a storm. Your plan should include evacuation routes, meeting places, and contact information for out-of-state relatives. Consider the specific needs of all family members, including children, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and pets.
  • Build an Emergency Supply Kit: Your kit should contain enough non-perishable food, water (one gallon per person per day for at least three to seven days), medications, a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, a whistle to signal for help, personal hygiene items, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio. Don't forget cash, as ATMs and credit card machines may not work if there is a power outage.
  • Stay Informed:
    • Sign up for Reverse Alert, the City and Nueces County’s emergency notification system, to receive critical updates via text, mobile phone, email, and more. Register at www.reversealert.org.
    • Monitor local news media for the latest weather updates and instructions from officials.
    • For more detailed information on hurricane preparedness, including checklists, evacuation zone maps, and resources, please visit the City of Corpus Christi Emergency Management website at www.corpuschristitx.gov/beready.
  • Prepare Your Home:
    • Trim trees and shrubs around your home to make them more wind resistant.
    • Secure or bring loose outdoor items such as trash cans, patio furniture, and decorations indoors.
    • Review your homeowners' or renters' insurance policy to ensure adequate coverage; remember that flood insurance is typically separate.
  • Know Your Zone: If you live in an evacuation zone, familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes. The city’s emergency management website provides this information.

"Our team works year-round with local, state, and federal partners to prepare for severe weather events," said Jace Johnson, Emergency Management Coordinator. "However, individual and family preparedness is the cornerstone of community resilience. We urge everyone to use the resources available and take these preparedness steps seriously."

The City of Corpus Christi is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. By preparing together, we can face any storm with greater confidence and strength.
