City’s Reduction in Recycling Contamination Linked to Effective Public Education Efforts
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The City’s Solid Waste Services is excited to announce a substantial decline in its recycling contamination rate, dropping from 34 percent to 27 percent, as revealed by the spring annual recycling audit conducted by Republic Services.
Recycling contamination occurs when non-recycled items or materials soiled with food and liquids are mixed with clean recyclables, which significantly reduces the quality of collected materials.
A recent audit shows that residents are actively participating and contributing to the overall success of the City's recycling program while making a positive difference in the community and helping create a cleaner and more sustainable environment for everyone.
This improved contamination rate brings Corpus Christi closer to the national average of 25 percent. This encouraging trend highlights the effectiveness of ongoing public education efforts in clarifying which materials are recyclable for residents.
"We are extremely encouraged by the findings of our latest recycling audit," said Philip Aldridge, Director of Solid Waste Services. "This impressive seven-point decrease in contamination reflects our community's dedication to recycling correctly and the success of our public outreach programs. We will continue enhancing our education efforts at public events, schools, and other City functions to reduce contamination rates further.”
These annual audits play a crucial role in determining the reimbursement rate the City receives for the sale of recycling commodities. For the audit, two routes are randomly selected from each collection day. The materials collected from these routes are then transported to Republic Services for comprehensive processing and analysis. The correct recycling commodities are separated from the residuals at the processing facility to identify what can be sold.
