Corpus Christi Animal Care Services Urges Pet Sterilization Ahead of "Kitten Season"

Perfect Time to Spay and Neuter Your Pets

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - As spring approaches, Corpus Christi Animal Care Services (CCACS) reminds pet owners of the importance of spaying and neutering their pets.

During the spring season, animal shelters experience a significant increase in newborn kittens due to peak breeding seasons. This annual surge can lead to overcrowding in shelters and an urgent need for foster homes. By having your pets sterilized, you can play a vital role in tackling pet overpopulation and improving animal well-being in our community.

CCACS encourages all pet owners to consider sterilization not only as a way to help control the number of homeless cats, but also as a key aspect of pet ownership. Together, we can make a difference for the pets that rely on us.

  • City Ordinance Compliance: Under Corpus Christi city ordinance, any free-roaming cat that is not spayed or neutered is subject to impoundment.
  • Health Benefits: Spaying females reduces the risk of uterine infections and breast tumors, while neutering males eliminates the risk of testicular cancer.
  • Better Behavior: Sterilized pets are less likely to roam, spray, mark territory, or engage in aggressive mating-related vocalizations.
  • Longevity: On average, spayed and neutered pets live longer, healthier lives.

When to Act

Pets can be sterilized as young as 8 weeks and 2 pounds. To prevent unwanted litters, the earlier, the better.
