Corpus Christi Water Shares Helpful Winter Pipe Protection Tips

Corpus Christi, TX – As the region moves into the colder winter months, Corpus Christi Water (CCW) is sharing helpful tips for homeowners to protect plumbing during the cold weather.

While there are currently no freezing temperatures in the forecast, taking these simple seasonal maintenance steps now can help ensure house pipes remain protected throughout the winter.

Simple Steps for Winter Home Preparation

These easy winterization steps can be done any time during the cooler months:

·         Wrap outdoor and exposed pipes with foam insulation. Towels, or pool noodles, can also be used

·         Disconnect outdoor hoses to prevent water from freezing in the lines

·         Cover outdoor faucets with insulated faucet covers or wrap them in towels

·         Drain irrigation systems

·         Insulate backflow devices to prevent freezing and backflow failure

·         Cover or insulate pool equipment to prevent damage to pumps and filters

If Freezing Temperatures Are in the Forecast

When temperatures are forecasted to fall below freezing at 32°F, here are a few simple extra steps:

·         Open cabinets under sinks in kitchens and bathrooms to allow warm air to circulate around pipes

·         Keep your home heated, even when traveling, to maintain temperatures above freezing

·         Check for leaks twice a day to catch any problems as they arise

·         Drip faucets if necessary: After implementing all preventative measures, and if additional protection is needed, select just one faucet (located the greatest distance from the main shut-off valve) and adjust it to drip only once every few seconds. It is recommended to catch the dripping water in a container for reuse.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the weather so they can take these preventative measures before temperatures drop to freezing.
