Corpus Christi's Solid Waste Services Exceeds Sustainability Goals in FY 2025

Sustainable Wins Include Efficiency Gains, Cost Reductions, and a Community-Led Recycling Solution

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The City of Corpus Christi’s Solid Waste Services Department (SWS) achieved a landmark year in its commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable environment. Through innovative strategies, SWS significantly reduced landfill use, generated significant cost savings, and boosted community participation in environmental efforts.

SWS’s commitment to innovation turns waste into valuable resources and substantial savings for the City.

Landfill Gas-to-Energy Plant: In its inaugural year, the plant delivered remarkable returns:

·       Generated over $4.6 million in revenue for the City.

·       Saved an estimated $230,000 in operating and maintenance costs.

·       Reduced emissions equivalent to taking 83,000 cars off the road annually.

Solid Waste Compost Yard: Construction officially began in September at the City's first-ever Compost Yard at Cefé Valenzuela Landfill.

·       Expected to open in spring 2026, the Compost Yard will process up to 120,000 tons of mixed organics annually.

·       The project is projected to save the City between $500,000 and $1 million yearly.

Corpus Christi residents actively contribute to the city's sustainability initiatives, which are supported by SWS's expanded outreach efforts.

Recycling Contamination Drops: A recent audit revealed that residents are actively participating and contributing to the overall success of the City's recycling program.

·       This audit shows that the recycling contamination rate dropped from 34 percent to an improved 27 percent.

The "Litter Critter" Program Expands: The popular community cleanup program hosted 12 monthly events.

·       A total of 2,280 vehicles/residents utilized the service at various locations throughout the City.

·       Nearly 760 tires were collected.

·       In a new collaboration, SWS partnered with two community organizations, Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union (RBFCU) and Shred-IT, to hold its first-ever paper shredding event in May 2025, collecting 7.5 tons of paper materials.

·       A cardboard recycling drop-off was successfully added to select events, collecting more than 1,000 pounds for recycling per event.

Environmental Coalition: SWS launched the Corpus Christi Environmental Coalition in the Fall of 2025, in partnership with the Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD).

·       This initiative connects the City with high school environmental clubs (grades 9-12) to promote sustainable practices through volunteerism, speakers, field trips, and leadership development.

“Our last year has proven that sustainability can be both a revenue generator and a community builder,” said Philip Aldridge, Director of Solid Waste Operations. “The millions generated by our landfill-gas-to-energy plant, the cost savings through our new compost facility, and active resident participation in recycling programs all show that Corpus Christi is serious about environmental stewardship and smart, green growth.”
