Council Approves Construction Contract for Northside Aquatic Center
Part of the Harbor Bridge Parks Project
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, the Council approved an $8.7 million construction contract with South Texas Building Partners, Inc. of Corpus Christi to build the Northside Aquatic Center. The facility will be located in the Hillcrest area of District 1. This state-of-the-art facility will significantly benefit both recreational and competitive swimmers.
The new aquatic center will feature a six-lane, 25-yard competition lap pool, a zero-entry beach area with a children’s play unit, and an open-body flume slide.
Additional amenities include a bathhouse for administration and mechanical support, a 92-space parking lot, a concrete pool deck, fabric shade structures, site lighting, and utility enhancements.
In an effort to conserve water and reduce evaporation, an eco-friendly, food-safe liquid cover will be applied to form an ultra-thin, invisible barrier on the water's surface.
Previously known as the T.C. Ayers Pool, the Northside Aquatic Center is part of the Harbor Bridge Parks Project, which aims to revitalize local parks affected by the construction of the newly opened Harbor Bridge. This initiative encompasses upgrades to Dr. H. J. Williams Park, T.C. Ayers Park, Washington Coles Park, Ben Garza Park, Hike and Bike Trail Connectivity, and North Beach Trailhead Connectivity. The Northside Aquatic Center will be built within T.C. Ayers Park.
“Corpus Christi continues with its momentum to expand recreation opportunities,” Robert Dodd, Director of Parks and Recreation, said. “The new Northside Aquatic Center, along with the Bill Witt Aquatic Center, which opened in 2025, will significantly enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike, providing venues for swim meets and competitive events along with recreation for all ages.”
Funding for the project is from the voter-approved Bond 2024 and reimbursement from the Metropolitan Planning Organization. Construction is scheduled to begin in March and is expected to be completed by March 2027.
