La Retama Central Library to Host First Native American Event Series

Event Lineup Starts on September 21

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The Corpus Christi Public Libraries are launching a new series of programs celebrating Native American culture and traditions. The series begins on Sunday, September 21, and runs through Friday, November 21, at the La Retama Central Library, 805 Comanche Street.

This lineup of events is designed to honor indigenous communities' rich heritage and living traditions and will include film screenings, author talks, and a cultural discussion panel.

All events are free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:

Pow Wow 101

  • Sunday, September 21, at 2:00 p.m.
  • Learn about the cultural significance of Pow Wows, proper etiquette, and hear from local Native voices. Enhance your understanding and appreciation of Native American culture.

Panel Discussion: Discovering the Past, Honoring the Present: A Conversation on Archaeology and Native American Communities

  • Saturday, October 18, at 2:00 p.m.
  • This panel will explore the role of archaeology in understanding Native American communities in the Coastal Bend. Moderated by Dr. Peter Moore, Professor of History at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, the discussion will feature panelists Dillon Beal (Curator at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History), Kim Cox (avocational archaeologist), and Love Sanchez (from Indigenous Peoples of the Coastal Bend).

Hands-on History: Pinch Pottery Workshop

  • Sunday, October 19, at 2:00 p.m.
  • Explore the ancient art of ceramics in this family-friendly workshop. Learn the fundamentals of this timeless technique used by cultures throughout history. This event is in partnership with the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History.

Native American Film Series: The library will present a three-film series highlighting Native American stories, culture, and identity.

  • Friday, November 7, at 11:00 a.m.: Flowers of the Killer Moon
  • Friday, November 14, at 11:00 a.m.: Dances with Wolves
  • Friday, November 21, at 11:00 a.m.: Smoke Signals

"Be Brave!" Story Time and Book Signing with Anthony Falcon

  • Saturday, November 15, at 2:00 p.m.
  • Local author Anthony Falcon will share the true story of his son Lakota's birth during Hurricane Harvey, which explores fatherhood, resilience, and Native American heritage. The event will include a Q&A and a book signing. Signed copies will be available for purchase.

"Lipan Chief Castillo 1854: My Ancestorial Journey" Author Talk and Book Signing

  • Sunday, November 16, at 2:00 p.m.
  • Local author Thomas "Bear Claw" Castillo will discuss his book, focusing on identity, legacy, and heritage themes. The event will include a discussion, Q&A, and a book signing. Signed copies will be available for purchase.
