Lake Texana Curtailment Postponed, City Secures Bed and Banks Permit

Governor Abbott acts to protect regional water supply

Corpus Christi, TX – During the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority (LNRA) Board Meeting on March 18, General Manager Patrick Brzozowski provided an update on the status of the Lake Texana reservoir and the implementation of the pro-rata drought contingency plan.

Brzozowski stated that his current plan is to avoid making any reductions in the delivery schedule or the volume of water diverted from Lake Texana at this time, allowing the City to continue drawing its current allotment. Prior to this meeting, the City would likely have been curtailed once the reservoir reached 50% capacity. Plans will be reassessed if Lake Texana reaches 40% capacity in the future.

The City also received its Bed-and-Bank Permit today for the western wellsite of the Nueces Groundwater Wells. The permit authorizes discharging up to 26 MGD from the Western and ERF Well Fields into the Nueces River.

These developments, which significantly improve the region’s water supply outlook, come following work from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who asked state agencies to expedite the issuance of temporary water permits and advised the LNRA to modify its drought contingency plan.

“We are grateful to Governor Abbott and our legislative delegation for recognizing the urgency of this situation and swiftly working on behalf of the Coastal Bend region,” said Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni. “We remain committed to working closely with the Governor’s Office, our legislative delegation, LNRA and TCEQ to improve the water supply for all customers.”
