City Council Approves Federal Grant to Improve Firefighter Safety
More Than $780,000 in Federal Funding Will Support Exhaust Removal Systems at 13 Fire Stations
CORPUS CHRISTI – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, the Council approved the acceptance of more than $780,000 in federal grant funding to install exhaust removal systems at 13 Corpus Christi fire stations. The improvements will help protect firefighters by reducing exposure to harmful diesel exhaust.
The funding will support the purchase and installation of ventilation systems designed to capture diesel exhaust directly from Corpus Christi Fire Department (CCFD) vehicles and safely remove it from fire stations. The systems use automatic magnetic connections that detach when vehicles move, allowing firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies.
The systems will be installed at 13 existing fire stations. Four additional fire stations currently under construction or in design will have exhaust removal systems included as part of their respective projects.
Installation will occur in phases, with approximately four to five stations completed per phase. The project is expected to take approximately 20 weeks to complete.
The City will provide a 10% local match toward the total project cost, with $781,818 provided through federal grant funding.
These improvements will help create healthier working environments for Corpus Christi firefighters while supporting the City’s continued investment in public safety infrastructure.
