City Opens Daytime Warming Centers and Coordinates with Area Homeless Providers in Wake of Cold Front
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX.- A strong cold front moved into the area overnight. The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures tonight in the low 40s, with wind chills expected to drop below 40 degrees by early Tuesday morning.
Colder temperatures are expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with lows in the upper 30s.
Due to lighter winds overnight Tuesday, wind chills are expected to be closer to actual air temperatures. The coldest conditions will be during the early morning hours on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Warming Centers
The City will open the following facilities as warming centers on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• La Retama Central Library, located at 805 Comanche Street
• Ethel Eyerly Senior Center, located at 654 Graham Road
• Ben F. McDonald Library, located at 4044 Greenwood Drive
• Owen R. Hopkins Library, located at 3202 Mckinzie Road
The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority (CCRTA) will provide free transportation to and from the warming centers for individuals in need.
“The safety and well-being of our residents is our top priority,” City Manager Peter Zanoni said. “During this period of cold weather, the City of Corpus Christi is opening warming centers to provide a safe and warm place for those in need. Even while City offices are closed for the Winter Holiday, our dedicated staff will be on-site to operate these centers and ensure that everyone has access to shelter and support.”
The following overnight shelter arrangements and other services by partner agencies have been identified for this event as follows:
• The Good Samaritan Ministries at 902 Nueces Bay Boulevard will operate under cold-weather guidelines, accepting individuals unless they have been previously banned.
• The Salvation Army Shelter at 1804 Buford Street is open and following its standard schedule.
• The Mother Teresa Day Shelter at 513 Sam Rankin Avenue is open Monday through Friday beginning at 7:00 a.m., with breakfast served at 8:00 a.m. Shelter clients are being informed of available overnight cold-weather resources.
Pet Safety
Additionally, City of Corpus Christi Animal Care Services (CCACS) reminds residents to take appropriate precautions for pets during cold weather conditions. If pets must remain outdoors, owners should provide a covered, weatherproof shelter elevated from the ground, with the entrance facing away from the wind.
Blankets or towels should be provided to help keep pets warm, and fresh food and water must always be available.
The City of Corpus Christi will continue to monitor weather conditions and maintain communication with service providers.
