News Release 2.6.26 City Addresses Groundwater Permit Process

Corpus Christi, TX – Ahead of the San Patricio County Groundwater Conservation District’s (SPCGCD) public hearing scheduled for February 6, the City of Corpus Christi anticipates the board will take no action to approve or deny drilling and transport permits for the Evangeline Groundwater Project. The City of Sinton, the St. Paul Water Supply Corporation, a Sinton farmer, a Sinton resident, and a Corpus Christi resident have filed permit protests. However, since filing, the Sinton resident has withdrawn their protest.

The SPCGCD’s rules require a preliminary hearing before a judge to determine whether these protests have legal standing to oppose the permit application.

For months, Corpus Christi Water and the City have invested significant time and resources into educating the public about the Evangeline Groundwater Project. These efforts have included hosting multiple public information sessions in Nueces and San Patricio Counties, presenting at city council meetings in neighboring communities, speaking to local groups, and participating in town halls to answer community questions.

“We have been transparent every step of the way,” said Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni. “Despite these extensive outreach efforts and attempts to negotiate in good faith with the City of Sinton, they have ceased communications.”

These potential delays do not halt the Evangeline Groundwater Project. The City continues to actively work on the project and pursue all available options to move it forward.

“The water security of our region depends on all of us working together,” said Zanoni. “These procedural delays are disappointing, but they do not stop our work. We remain open to dialogue and collaboration, and we’ll continue pursuing every pathway available to ensure our region has the water resources it needs.”
