Health District Hosts First Public Health Summit

Uniting South Texas Partners to Build Healthier Communities

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District held its first Public Health Summit, bringing together over 100 committed public health partners across Region 11- South Texas.

Titled "The A.R.T. of Public Health Summit," the event was held on the campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The theme, A.R.T. – Access, Resources, and Teachings, captures the core of public health and emphasizes its ongoing significance.  

It featured insightful discussions on access, resources, and teachings concerning chronic disease prevention and management. The summit initiated critical conversations to advance the health and well-being of residents throughout the Coastal Bend.

The program included a welcome from Assistant City Manager Sony Peronel. The keynote speaker, Liz Mathews, RN, is an advocate with the American Heart Association who has 26 years of experience in critical care nursing.

Throughout the day, a diverse lineup of speakers participated in panel discussions centered on topics such as preparing the future of the public health workforce, adopting a holistic approach to chronic disease, and exploring the lifespan of chronic disease.

"This occasion marks a pivotal moment for our region," said Dr. Dante Gonzalez, Interim Director of Public Health. "It was impactful to bring together dedicated public health professionals under one roof to collaboratively address the access, resources, and education in chronic disease prevention and management. The connections and networking made here today will undoubtedly strengthen our collective efforts to build healthier, more resilient communities across South Texas. This summit exemplifies the power of partnership and our shared commitment to public health."

Attendees were engaged through presentations, panels and networking opportunities that encouraged exchanging innovative ideas, community collaboration, and best practices to strengthen a cohesive public health response. The event also allowed health workers and physicians to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs), underscoring the Health District's dedication to professional development and empowering partners with the latest knowledge and resources for effective community service.

The health summit, designed in partnership with the American Heart Association, Visit Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and the Nueces County Medical Society, promotes collaboration among public health professionals, including physicians, educators, and government agencies.
