Parks and Recreation Department Implements Sustainability Initiative for Watering Newly Planted Trees

Tree T-Pees Proven to Reduce Water Consumption by 90 Percent

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department has taken proactive measures in response to the Stage 3 drought by implementing conservation strategies to support over 200 recently planted trees, which require ongoing irrigation for optimal growth. In exploring water-efficient solutions, staff identified using Tree T-Pees as a practical option. These devices help retain moisture at the tree's roots, the area of greatest need. The manufacturer reports that they reduce water usage by up to 90%, supporting our water conservation efforts.

The Department has acquired 515 Tree T-Pees and has observed meaningful benefits compared to traditional hand-watering methods. The irrigation process focuses on utilizing Type 1 effluent water, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability. Tree T-Pees have been installed at the following five parks: West Guth, Labonte, Hans & Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge, Schanen, and Cullen.

The Tree T-Pee is designed to fit around the base of each tree, functioning similarly to a small greenhouse by directing water efficiently to the roots. This approach promotes deeper root growth and has been shown to increase the growth rate of young trees by approximately 30%. Additionally, the time required to water each tree has been reduced from ten to approximately two minutes.

The Parks Operations team manages three 1,025-gallon tanks filled with Type 1 effluent water from the Oso Treatment Plant. When at a designated site, team members coordinate with the Corpus Christi Fire Department to utilize their water truck for on-site refills. This partnership has improved the efficiency of the watering process by minimizing travel time for refills and has reduced Park Operations staff hours.

With the implementation of the Tree T-Pees, the overall time needed to water all newly planted trees has decreased from eleven to seven days. We are pleased to observe the effectiveness and efficiency of this innovative arboricultural tool within our park system.
