Public Health District Monitoring Mosquito Activity Following Recent Rain Events

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District is monitoring and assessing mosquito activity following recent rain events and will treat affected areas as necessary. 

Recent rainfall can create standing water, which provides breeding areas for mosquitoes. Vector Control crews are actively inspecting areas, monitoring mosquito activity, and responding based on field observations, service requests, and public health risk.

Targeted mosquito control is effective, helps protect public health, and reduces the risk of mosquitoes developing resistance to treatment products.

“Our Vector Control Team will continue to monitor conditions and respond where treatment is needed,” said Dr. Anita K Kurian, Public Health Director.  “Our goal is to use mosquito control methods responsibly and effectively while helping residents reduce mosquito breeding areas around their homes.”

Residents can help reduce mosquito populations by following the “Drain and Dress” method:

• Drain standing water from flowerpots, buckets, gutters, birdbaths, pet bowls, tires, and other containers. 
• Dress appropriately by wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors. 
• Use EPA-registered insect repellent when spending time outside. 
• Keep doors and windows closed or make sure screens are in good condition. 

Residents experiencing high mosquito activity may report concerns by calling the City 311 Call Center.

The Public Health District will continue to assess mosquito activity and provide updates as needed.
