UPDATE: City to Open Overnight Warming Shelter in Wake of Cold Front
In Coordination with Area Homeless Providers
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - A strong cold will move into the area this weekend. The National Weather Service is forecasting the coldest temperatures of the season, with lows below 40 degrees. Wind chills late Saturday night into Sunday morning will make it feel even colder, dropping the feels-like temperature to approximately 32 degrees. This should continue for four hours.
In anticipation of this, the City will open an Overnight Warming Shelter at the FEMA Dome at the Del Mar College Windward Campus, 4101 Old Brownsville Road, from 5:00 p.m. Saturday to 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority (CCRTA) will provide free transportation from the Staples Street Station to the Overnight Warming Shelter beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Saturday. Return transportation to the Staples Street Station will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
As part of the City's efforts, Corpus Christi Police Officers will monitor people they encounter during patrols to determine whether assistance is needed, including providing transportation and blankets.
We are also in communication with Good Samaritan Rescue Mission and Mother Teresa Shelter. Currently, they both have sufficient capacity, but we will continue to communicate with them to respond appropriately if needed.
Pet Safety
Additionally, the City of Corpus Christi Animal Care Services (CCACS) reminds residents to take appropriate precautions for pets during cold weather. If pets must remain outdoors, owners should provide a covered, weatherproof shelter elevated from the ground, with the entrance facing away from the wind.
Blankets or towels should be provided to help keep pets warm, and fresh food and water must always be available.
The City of Corpus Christi will continue to monitor weather conditions and maintain communication with service providers.
