MLK Day

Community Members Celebrating Martin Luther King Day

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a social activist and Baptist minister who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968.

King sought equality and human rights for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and all victims of injustice through peaceful protest. He organized a number of peaceful protests including the famous March on Washington – which we continue to recognize annually as a country and community.

MLK Day honors the civil rights leader on the third Monday in January, around January 15 which is his birthday. It is designated as a federal holiday to promote service, equality, and community uplift with celebrations including marches, educational events, and more. For 2026, it falls on Monday, January 19.
