Planning for Pets
Emergency Planning for Pets
Pets need special planning consideration both when sheltering in place or evacuating.
When planning for pets during a disaster, consider
-
Food and water needs. Your pets will need water for hydration—at least one gallon per day, per animal.
If you need to evacuate, consider:
-
Pet supplies such as food, medications, special needs
-
Identification tags
-
Crating needs
-
Collars, harnesses, and leashes/leads to keep your pets close to you
-
Transportation needs
-
Vaccination records and/or tags, especially for rabies vaccine
-
Most shelters, but not all, will have a location to shelter animals
Pets may exhibit behavioral changes before, during, and after a disaster. If you are relocating to an unfamiliar location, pets may become aggressive. Plan ahead to ensure that your pets feel as secure as possible.
Pet owners can also enroll in the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry program (STEAR). When registering for STEAR, you will be asked vital information for local emergency responders, such as information about your pets.

About Us
The Office of Emergency Management provides information and guidance to the public during an emergency. During an emergency, the Office operates the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) — a central office which allows for face-to-face coordination among personnel who must make emergency decisions. As a division of the Fire Department, the Office also works year-round planning for different emergencies scenarios, and providing the public with resources to help the community Prepare, Respond and Recover from any emergency event.
