Beach Safety
Planning a beach trip? Did you know that most beach rescues involve visitors who are unfamiliar with local surf conditions? We want you to enjoy the waves, not be overwhelmed by them. Before you head down to the gulf beaches, review these beach safety tips with your family and friends.
Drownings and injuries are preventable. Know before you go.
-
Take swim lessons before your next trip to the beach. Getting "beach ready" starts in the pool. Before your next trip to the gulf coast, ensure everyone in the family has had recent swim lessons. It’s the best foundation for a safe day in the water.
-
Swim near lifeguards. They can only help you if they can see you. It’s the simplest way to keep you protected.
-
Be aware of your surroundings. The gulf coast is home to stingrays, jellyfish, Portuguese man o’war, and other marine animals. Wear water shoes, do the "stingray shuffle" (slide your feet through the sand), and keep an eye out for purple beach flag warnings indicating marine life are nearby.
-
Learn about surf conditions. If you’re planning a beach getaway, remember waves and currents change by the hour. Before you dive in, check the local surf report and tide schedules. Understanding the power of the water is the first step toward a safe beach day. Check conditions on our daily Facebook stories on the City of Corpus Christi - Government or Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Facebook pages.
-
Learn how to break the grip. Remember, the gulf is not a pool. It has moving currents, varying depths, and unpredictable surf. If you're visiting the coast, make sure you're beach ready. Learn how to "Break the Grip of the Rip" before you arrive. Visit the National Weather Service webpage to learn more about rip currents.
-
Supervise children. Taking the kids to beach? Keep your eyes on your children at all times. Designate an adult "water watcher" who is dedicated to active supervision.
-
Use the buddy system. Never swim alone. Even the most experienced swimmers can drown or get injured in gulf waters. Make sure someone is always there to help or call for assistance if needed.
-
Use life jackets for kids and weak swimmers. Taking your littles to the beach soon? Gear up for safety by making sure kids and weak swimmers wear a life jacket before entering the water. Don't rely on floaties or inflatable toys.
-
Avoid alcohol. Stay sharp on the water this summer. Alcohol and gulf waters are a dangerous mix. Whether you’re swimming, surfing, or driving, alcohol impairs your judgment and physical ability. Save the drinks for when you're safely back at the hotel or home.
-
Learn about beach rules. Whether you’re a regular or it’s your first time traveling to the gulf coast, take a quick minute to learn the "lay of the sand." A little bit of prep goes a long way in making sure your family has the best and safest vacation possible. Visit our beach rules webpage to learn more.
