Crime Control and Prevention District

In 1997, the citizens of Corpus Christi voted to establish the Crime Control and Prevention District (CCPD). The District was renewed by voters in 2002 for five years and again in 2007 for a ten-year period.

In 2026, voters will once more be asked to renew the CCPD for an additional ten years.

Funding for the District comes from a one-quarter cent sales tax dedicated to implementing crime reduction strategies. The CCPD is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the City Council. This Board works closely with the City and the Police Department to develop a crime control budget plan designed to enhance public safety and support crime prevention throughout the community.

CCPD funding provides essential resources to support crime reduction initiatives focused on enforcement, neighborhood crime prevention, and the improvement of police equipment, technology, and infrastructure. Examples include real-time information access from patrol vehicles, the drone and e-bike patrol programs, Enduro motorcycles, in-car video systems, body-worn cameras, tasers, and strategically placed safety cameras. Funding also supports the replacement of police vehicles and other critical public safety equipment, each serving as a force multiplier for the department.

The CCPD also funds 78 sworn police officer positions and key programs such as Bike Patrol, the K-9 Unit, Directed Patrol, Traffic Safety, and Crime Prevention Specialists. Officers supported through CCPD funding lead a variety of community outreach and crime prevention initiatives, including “Operation Safe Return,” the Police Athletic League, National Night Out, the Police Explorer Program, safety inspections for businesses and residences, anti-bullying campaigns, and active shooter preparedness presentations.
