Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Crime Control and Prevention District?

The Crime Control and Prevention District is a supplemental funding source for the police officer personnel
who manage crime prevention initiatives and public safety programs throughout Corpus Christi.

It was established by voters in 1997 and has been renewed three times since. The District is governed by a
Board of Directors appointed by the City Council and operates separately from the City's general budget.

Does the renewal create a new tax?

No. The renewal proposition asks voters whether to continue an existing one-eighth cent sales tax that is
already in place. It does not create a new tax or increase the current sales tax rate.

What happens if the renewal is not approved?

If the proposition does not pass, Crime Control and Prevention District funding would expire after April 2028.

How long has the Crime Control and Prevention District been in operation?

The Crime Control and Prevention District has been in effect since 1997. It was renewed by voters in 2002 for
five years, again in 2007 for a 10-year period, and again in 2017 for another 10-year period. The 2026
proposition would renew it for another 10 years.
